About Us
The Children of Sikkim exists to support the education of disadvantaged children from Sikkim, in the Himalaya, NE India.
We are a UK registered charity which helps such children to be educated in Sikkim and elsewhere in India, from primary school through to college or university.
We give a child continuity of support so as to allow them to achieve their potential.
Making a Difference
Imagine being able to completely change the life prospects of a poor child from remote Sikkim.
Sponsoring a child’s education for as little as £20 a month can help do just that. Any amount will make a difference.
Sikkimese Children
Buddhist by culture, poor Sikkimese children have no material possessions but are rich in outlook – open, optimistic, grateful, very bound to family, friendships and sharing.
In 2004 Samjyor was 10 years old. Unpaved mountainous roads made travelling daily to school impossible and his parents were too poor to pay for living away from home – his prospects were minimal. Then sponsorship transformed his education.
In 2019 he completed his Master’s degree at the Law faculty of Delhi university, and works as an advocate in Delhi in various courts up to the Supreme Court. He has a bright future, and is looking at some point to go back to Sikkim and help development.
What You’ll Find on Our Website
This site tells you about some of our experiences, contains sponsor remarks and a picture gallery, and tells you how to sponsor, donate or raise funds for the charity.
In the UK, you can also donate at no cost by shopping through Amazon Smile (see details on our giving page).
Businesses can donate as well. In the UK contributions are tax deductible.
In India, we have teamed up with Sri Kamakshi Seva Samithi (Registered Trust) of Mumbai to receive donations and disburse on our behalf. These amounts are tax deductible in India and qualify as CSR contributions.
We hope this motivates you to help. If you do, you will know that 100% of what you provide is spent on education and support, because The Children of Sikkim is run by volunteers who take no expenses. In addition, if donors pay UK tax we can recover an additional 25% from the UK Government.
If you would like more information than you can find on this site, please contact us.
